Aloe Vera has been widely grown as an ornamental plant and makes a great houseplant. The thick, fleshy, green to grey-green leaves enables the species to survive in areas of low natural rainfall, making it ideal for rockeries and other low water-use gardens.
The species is popular with modern gardeners as a medicinal plant - it is effective in reducing inflammations and easing pain from the likes of grazes, insect bites and sunburn; simply cut a leaf away from the base of the plant to reveal the gel-like sap inside and squeeze out the substance which you can use to rub into your skin. Like most succulents, Aloe is intolerant of heavy frost and snow and is best kept indoors or in heated glasshouses during the winter season.
Re-pot further as necessary and grow on indoors in bright but indirect light and well-ventilated conditions. Make sure the pot has adequate drainage, as this plant does not tolerate being in soil that is too wet. Water and then allow to dry out - water moderately when growing, and sparingly when dormant through the winter months. Plants can be moved outdoors during the summer months.
