Alkanet - Anchusa officinalis is a biennial. With its narrow leaves and soft hair which has attractive violet flowers it is similar to borage and comfrey.
It has large fleshy roots which are where the well known red dye comes from. Can reach a height of 45cm
When to Sow: Sow in early April to early June
Where to Sow: In open ground or cold frame
What to do Next: Thin out the seedlings as they grow to 5cm apart. Planting out in September and October.
