Field Sunflower (Helianthus annuus) is an annual which can grow to a great height with huge yellow heads filled with striped seeds
The seeds are very nutritious eaten raw or roasted and yield a polyunsaturated oil. They are positive phototropism, meaning the head turn through-out the day to follow the sun.
When to Sow: Sow during late March to early June.
Where to Sow: Sow outside directly into a weed free site about 2cm deep. Or sow indoors in early spring, placing seeds in 12mm in individual pots 7.5cm 3in) at 68-72°F (20-22°C).
Germination normally takes between 7-10 days. Once the plants are established, harden off gradually and plant out in early June, when all chances of frost has ceased.
