PERLITE Horticultural Grade Size 1-5 A natural product Perlite has been used in the horticultural industry for many years. Made from volcanic rock this sterile substance is often used as an ingredient in compost mixes or for improving aeration and drainage in soils. It can also be used as a stand-alone product in hydroponic growing systems or sometimes for difficult to root cuttings. Disease and weed free and with an almost neutral pH Perlite has the ability to minimise fluctuations of temperature and to hold moisture without becoming soggy. Blended with peat moss and fertilizer it makes an excellent soil-less compost, light, airy and easy to use. When used for sowing seeds Perlite encourages faster germination and improved seedling growth with less check when potting on. Perlite helps provide the perfect balance of air and water and as a result cuttings root much quicker when it is blended into the rooting mixture. Used in place of grit or sand in potting compost Perlite will improve aeration, insulation and drainage. Composts which incorporate Perlite are almost impossible to waterlog and it is also helpful in rewetting composts which have dried out. When worked into heavy or clay soils Perlite will improve the texture, increase aeration and drainage and reduce caking.
