TROPICA - Aloe vera (Aloe vera syn. Aloe barbadensis Mill.) - 10 Seeds
Worth knowing: The genus "Aloe" covers about 300 species and belongs to the succulent rosette plants. For centuries, magic healing powers have been assigned to the plant. A lot of flowery names have been assigned to Aloe, names like "Desert Lily", "Magic of the sky", "Doctor in a pot".
Origin: Canary Islands to East and West India.
Propagation: Seeds can be started indoors at any time throughout the year. Mix fine ground cultivation soil with about 25 % of fine sand (silica sand works best). In order to guarantee that the seeds will not fall through the soil, the soil mixture should not be too coarse. Moisten the mixture with a water vaporiser and sprinkle the fine seeds on the soil. All cacti are light germinators, therefore the seeds should be left uncovered. Sufficient warmth (16 to 25°C) and high humidity are crucial now.
Place / Light: The sunnier the location, the better the Aloe thrives. Nevertheless, the plant also manages to survive in shaded and dark locations, even for several years. An outdoor position during summer is possible as well.
Care: Water only after the substratum has dried out. Young plants should generally be kept a little moister. Rain water and water free of lime are ideal. A surplus of water should be poured out in order to avoid standing water and root rotting. The Aloe should be supplied with tub plant fertilizer every 3 weeks from March until September.
Winter period: Also in winter, the Aloe should be positioned in a bright spot. The following rule applies: The brighter the location, the higher the temperature. In case the plant spends the winter in a fairly dark location, temperatures should not rise above 10°C.
