Worth knowing: The giant cactus belongs to the pillar-shaped stem succulents and is able to grow up to heights of 12 to 15 meters in its natural habitat. Branches then measure up to 50 cm in diameter. It does, however, grow extremely slowly. Although it does not grow so large in size when kept indoors, this easy to care for cactus is the perfect enrichment plant for every cactus collection.
Origin: Mexico, Southern California and Arizona.
Propagation: Seeds can be started indoors at any time throughout the year. Mix fine ground cultivation soil with about 25 % of fine sand (silica sand works best). In order to guarantee that the seeds will not fall through the soil, the soil mixture should not be too coarse. Moisten the mixture with a water vaporiser and sprinkle the fine seeds on the soil. All cacti are light germinators, therefore the seeds should be left uncovered.
Place / Light: The cactus should be placed in a semi-shaded to shaded location. An airy place during summer is ideal. Moved in an outdoor position, the plant should be sheltered from sun and rain.
Care: The cactus is very sensitive to wetness and should therefore be watered carefully. Water only after the substratum has dried out. Young plants should generally be kept a little moister. Rain water and water free of lime are ideal. A surplus of water should be poured out in order to avoid standing water and root rotting. Supply the plant with liquid cactus fertilizer every 4 weeks from end of March until September.
Winter period: The cactus should not be exposed to temperatures below 5°C during winter. Water little.
